In a tearful plea to the public, local personality Clare Agius has posted a raw and emotional video to her Facebook page about plastic pollution that has consumed not only our island, but the world. She starts off the video by saying that “five million pieces of plastic are estimated to be in the sea, right now. Scientists are saying that until 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in our seas.”

Plastic waste is such a severe problem that eventually it will become fossilized - so much so that scientists have called it the 'era of plastic.' She also says that every minute, a whopping one billion plastic bottles are sold around the world.

She goes on to share four horror stories related to plastic pollution and its effect on animals. In the caption to the video, she says, “It will probably be the most valid message I will every share! Raw and emotional, I hope it moves you and you will feel inclined to share.”

Speaking with Clare about the motivation behind it, she explains that the idea came about while researching for an advert on biodegradable products. Clare came across horrific stories and immediately wanted to do something to create awareness about the situation. “I called up my friend Kurt Cauchi and we shot it in an hour at Golden Bay. I had no script, so everything was raw and emotional. The only thing I did write was the last bit and the three messages at the end of the video. Everything else was spontaneous,” Clare tells us.

The video exploded overnight, with many moved to share Clare's message. During our chat, Clare also tells us that she was contacted by colleagues to take the video abroad with them to a conference, and she is currently working on creating English subtitles for the video, to be able to share her messages not only locally, but internationally as well.

“Let’s get everybody doing something,” she says.
